Making Winchester a low-carbon town

WINACC: Winchester Action on Climate ChangeWinchester Action on Climate Change (WinACC) is a coalition of local organizations and citizens determined to cut Winchester’s carbon footprint. By setting an example and clearly spelling out the benefits to health and happiness of a low-carbon lifestyle, they hope for a cultural shift throughout the city and surrounding district.

WinACC is distinctive because it works with the most influential local organisations, through the Local Strategic Partnership, as well as with individuals and households. Encouraged by WinACC, this Partnership has set the ambitious target of cutting carbon emissions by 20% by 2012.

Most members of WinACC are individuals. To join, they calculate their carbon footprint using the ACT ON CO2 calculator, record it with WinACC and say how they aim to cut it. Organizations do the same, but they must show their footprint on the WinACC website.

The only permanent member of staff is paid for by contributions from Winchester City Council, the county council, NHS, university and various charitable trusts. Most of the work is done by volunteers. Thirty-five members have trained as Low Carbon Champions to influence and encourage others in their communities, with more training planned for workplace Champions.

WinACC organizes events such as showing the film ‘The Age of Stupid’, and workshops where householders can calculate their carbon footprint. Their website shares forums, tips and encouragement.
